Extreme Weather Policy

  1. Overview

Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill considers there is an extreme weather situation when the following factors are present: public transport in the Aberdeenshire region is severely disrupted and/or social work transport for day service attenders is suspended. During an extreme weather situation parts of the Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill service might not be operational. The guiding principles for how Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill will manage staffing and operations during such situations are:

  • Early communication of a decision to close the service. This will be done through both public announcements via social media as well as internal communication (managers to relevant workshop leaders to co-workers, etc.)

  • Safety of co-workers and residents is paramount

  • Co-workers will make every effort to reach their place of work

  1. What you need to know and do

Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill’s senior managers are responsible for deciding on either early closures of parts of the services or full day closures. Co-worker are expected to help facilitate residents getting their transports home before leaving Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill on days that the service is interrupted during the working day. Supported Living does not close due to weather and a plan will be made in individual situations, which may include shared support, phone support reduced hours or working with vocational co-workers to cover support.

Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill asks that employees make every effort to adhere to their normal working hours in adverse conditions. Tigh a'Chomainn Camphill appreciates the commitment of employees to support the organisation to the best of their abilities in adverse weather conditions.

  1. Co-workers will be paid on days when the senior Service Manager text or phone them to say the service is closed and that due to the severity of weather conditions they need not attend work. Until co-workers receive such a message they should plan to attend work as normal.

  2. In circumstances when the decision to suspend attendance at work has NOT been taken, and individual co-workers decide they cannot attend work due to localised severe weather conditions affecting their travel, they will be asked to work back missed working days up to a limit of two working days

  3. Co-workers who decide they are unable to travel to work due to localised severe weather conditions for periods longer than two working days will take unpaid leave
